Executive Summary: The purpose of the Joint Library is to support the operational work of the Fund and the Bank Group by providing library services for their respective personnel. Its collection therefore comprises those publications and other materials of a library nature which are required to meet the working needs of the two organizations.1 This guiding policy is still as useful today as it was when it was written over 25 years ago and it continues to lay the foundation for the Joint Library=s Collection Development Policy. While this policy overall has focused on the types of materials that we need to select and therefore add to the Joint Library, there has not been a corresponding policy in place for systematically discarding items that are no longer needed or useful to maintain. That is the purpose of this report: to serve as a working document outlining the policies for weeding the library collection.2 It is not intended to outline the specific step-by-step processes which are involved in discarding unused material from the collection. In order to keep the collection vital and up-to-date, and also to conserve physical space over the coming years, the Collection Management Team has developed criteria for discarding older and less frequently used materials. As a general rule, weeding should be done as an ongoing, integral part of the work of maintaining the Library=s collection. In the future, if decisions to retain valuable older materials are taken, it might become necessary to use remote storage to house them. The Inter-American Development Bank Library currently uses a remote storage facility in Lanham, Maryland that could serve as a model for this purpose. This facility stores statistical yearbooks and other statistical series from central banks and central statistical offices of member countries only, that are older than 10 years. If needed, library staff can request specific titles from storage and receive them within two working days.
