Excerpt: An area with complex bathymetry and many small islands, with narrow shelves; it was formerly considered an area of low biological productivity. Fairly extensive trawlable shelves occur mainly in the north and western areas. The area is under the influence of low productivity Mediterranean inflows from the south along the Turkish coast, and Black Sea inflows along the Greek mainland in the north and west. These latter areas have received nutrient inflows in recent years from the Black Sea and from incoming rivers in the western Aegean. Together with increases in fleet power, we may question the part environmental change has played in the increased production from this area in recent years.
